According to Liv-ex statistics, for many years, Lafite wines consistently topped the list in terms of price per case, particularly sought after by Chinese buyers, with prices doubling and reaching a peak of £14,700 per case. However, in 2011, Chinese consumers began to recognize Romanée-Conti, and its price also soared, reaching over £20,000 per case—more than double that of Lafite. Even the legendary Petrus reached £20,000 per case. The Lafite myth began to crumble, prices plummeted, and the entire Bordeaux region lost its appeal. The rise of Romanée-Conti led to a surge in demand for red wines throughout Burgundy.

Only a handful of bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's 2007 La Tâche red wine are available in mainland China, commanding prices exceeding 100,000 RMB, and are essentially collector's prized possessions. It was named the "World's Best Red Wine" in 2011; only its own wine series can rival Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's top ranking, even surpassing Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Pétrus. This list, published annually by Robb Report, a leading global luxury goods research institution, selects the finest red wines from hundreds worldwide. Every wine on the list is a masterpiece, possessing extraordinary characteristics and charm.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was ranked fifth among the world's top ten wineries by the London International Vintners Exchange (Liv-ex) in 2011. The ranking is based on five criteria: recent sales volume, wine tasting scores, price per case, price growth, and weighted production value. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti wines are the most expensive globally. The second most expensive is Petrus. The London International Vintners Exchange (Liv-ex) is a barometer of the global high-end wine market, accounting for over 75% of global high-end wine sales, making this ranking highly authoritative.
Most of the world's most famous and top-tier wines come from the Bordeaux region of France. Among the most renowned Bordeaux wineries are Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Petrus , which have become increasingly sought after by wealthy Southeast Asians in recent years, driving up prices. Lafite, in particular, has become incredibly popular in China. However, even the owners of top Bordeaux wineries express profound respect when discussing La Romanée-Conti. Count Alexandre de Lughsalus, who led Chateau d'Yquem, one of Bordeaux's top wineries, for over 30 years, once mentioned that in his home, the legendary wine, La Romanée-Conti, could only be discussed in hushed tones and with utmost respect.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is Burgundy's most famous and prestigious vineyard, one of the world's most expensive and oldest vineyards since 1760. Well-known since the 12th century, it was owned by the prominent Vergy family. Later, it came into the possession of the Duke of Conti, who named the vineyard after himself, and the name "Romanée-Conti" has remained to this day. Since acquiring the wine, Conti has treasured the vineyard, never giving it away except to royalty, not even to close friends. As a result, "Romanée-Conti" has become a rare and precious wine on the market.

The World's Number One Estate: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

Origin: Vosne-Romanee, Burgundy, France
Level: Grand Cru; Grape Variety: Pinot Noir
Planted area: 4.32 acres; Average tree age: 42 years (1990)
Yield: 2,000 to 2,500 liters of grapes per hectare (equivalent to 4,800 to 6,000 bottles)
Characteristics: Extremely low production volume, high quality, requires quota, and is very expensive.

The village of Vosne-Romanee, where Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is located, comprises seven Grand Cru wineries. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti independently owns two complete Grand Cru vineyards: the 1.805-hectare Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and the 6.06-hectare Domaine de La Tache , hence the "MONOPOLE" label on these wines, signifying exclusive ownership. It also owns approximately 3.51 hectares of Domaine Richebourg , 5.29 hectares of Domaine Romanée-Saint-Vivant , 3.53 hectares of Domaine Grand Echezeaux, 4.67 hectares of Domaine Echezeaux , and less than 0.6759 hectares of the Grand Cru white wine estate Montrachet . Romanée-Conti names its wines after different wineries, and all of its products are of the highest quality, with Romanée-Conti being the best among them. With such a wealth of gems, Romanée-Conti truly deserves its reputation as "the finest vineyard in the world."

If we were to select the 100 best wines in the world, I believe Romanée-Conti would undoubtedly be number one, and the only wine that could challenge it is the La Tache series , also under the same label. La Tache wasn't originally part of the Romanée-Conti family; it's located in the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, France, and has a history of at least 200 years. Its relationship with Romanée-Conti is extremely close, and they share a similar fate. In the 17th century, both La Tache and Romanée-Conti were once owned by the Cronbourg family. However, the latter was seized by the renowned Duke of Conti, while La Tache was acquired by the local prominent Joly de Bevy family.

During the French Revolution, the Joly de Bevy family and the Romanée-Conti family, both being nobles, fled overseas, and Château Latâche suffered the misfortune of being confiscated and auctioned off. After 140 years of changing hands, it was once again purchased by the Duvo Broger family, owners of Château Romanée-Conti. Finally, two of the best vineyards in Burgundy were once again owned by the same person. Originally, the land that truly belonged to Château Latâche was only 1.44 hectares, slightly smaller than that of Château Romanée-Conti. When Duvo Broger acquired Château Latâche in 1933, he also acquired the less desirable 4-hectare Gaudichau vineyard in the upper left corner. With a court ruling, the wines produced from these newly acquired vineyards could be labeled "Château Latâche." Therefore, the total area of Château Latâche now reaches 6.06 hectares, more than three times the size of the original "pure" Château Latâche.

Château Latâche is just a stone's throw from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and since both estates are managed by the same person, their winemaking methods, quality management, and oak barrel materials are virtually identical. However, their tastes differ. Latâche wines are more robust, full-bodied, and have a deep, concentrated color; Romanée-Conti wines are more aromatic, noble, elegant, and enduring. Ultimately, these distinctions depend on individual taste. Essentially, Latâche is the only red wine that can challenge Romanée-Conti's "King of Wines" status. While it wouldn't be surprising if the "King of Wines" lost out in certain vintages, given the significant price difference, tasting both Latâche and Romanée-Conti provides a glimpse into their differences. The renowned wine connoisseur Hugh Johnson, after tasting a bottle of 1962 La Tâche in 1982, commented as follows: "Immediately upon opening, a strong and intense aroma of violets fills the air, transforming within 20 minutes into bursts of fruity notes, first orange, then blackberry. The 30 minutes after opening is the most aromatic—brilliant and full-bodied, with a moderate and softening alcohol content. Drinking La Tâche is truly a wondrous experience—not just because of its rapid and expansive transformation. The beauty of La Tâche, ranking among the world's top 100 wines, lies in the fact that each person can interpret its rich character differently. Its ever-changing aromas penetrate the taster's very being, making one feel, in a trance, as if they were a butterfly freely soaring through a field of blooming flowers."

Romanee Conti boasts an incredibly complex and varied aroma. According to Aubert himself, it has "the scent of a fading rose, so captivating it's unforgettable." This sweet and rich wine lingers on the palate even minutes after the glass is put down. The only headache is the price. Even a bottle of 1998 Romanee Conti young costs over $2,500, while older vintages range from $3,000 to $5,000. Rare vintages command astronomical prices. Despite this, demand far exceeds supply. To address this, the winery employs a bundling system: you must purchase five other DRC wines to buy one Romanee Conti. Fortunately, DRC wines are always of exceptional quality, making them highly sought after but rarely available. They are only seen at major wine auctions and are virtually nonexistent in regular retail stores.
