La Tache: An exclusive Grand Cru vineyard comparable to Romanée-Conti

Whenever La Tâche Grand Cru is mentioned, people naturally think of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, as it is the monopole of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. In the minds of Burgundy wine lovers, La Tâche firmly occupies the second place in the winery.
Whether the "Tache" in La Tache's name is "Tâche" or "Tache" remains a mystery. Despite the difference being a single phonetic symbol, the two French words have vastly different meanings: the phonetic "Tâche" means "task," while the unphonetic "Tache" means "stain." From a viticultural perspective, the former is clearly more relevant. A widely accepted theory holds that La Tache means "task," originally referring to the vineyards being tended by workers, who were paid according to the amount of work they performed. Starting with the 1978 vintage, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti officially added this phonetic symbol to its wine labels.
Although La Tâche exists today as a single vineyard, its single-vineyard structure has been challenged and the vineyard area has expanded significantly over the past 100 years.
The vineyard originally belonged to the monks of Saint-Vivant Abbey, from whom the Croonembourg family purchased it in the 1630s. After the 1760s, the vineyard changed hands several times.
In 1815, the estate passed to Comte Louis Liger-Belair. The Liger-Belair family continued to own La Tache for 118 years, during which time La Tache further solidified its reputation as one of Burgundy's great terroirs.
During this period, however, the owners of the neighboring vineyard, Les Gaudichots, began attempting to sell wine under the La Tache name. The increasing number of wines labeled as La Tache angered the Ribey family, and the dispute was finally settled in 1932 with the result that all wines from the main parcels of Les Gaudichots could be sold under the La Tache name, paving the way for the subsequent incorporation of the Gaudichots parcels into La Tache. By this time, most of the Gaudichots estate belonged to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
In 1933, the Ribeye family was forced to sell its vineyards due to inheritance disputes, and La Tache was acquired by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. With this ruling in mind, it was only natural for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to merge its holdings of Gaudí into La Tache.
In 1936, the French Appellation of Concord (AOC) system was officially introduced, and the combined La Tache vineyards, comprising over one hectare of the original La Tache vineyard and over four hectares of the Gaudí vineyard, were successfully designated as Grand Crus. Due to a series of circumstances, La Tache vineyards were expanded within a few years and became the exclusive Grand Cru of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
La Tache lies in the heart of the Côte de Nuits appellation, at the southernmost tip of Vosne-Romanée, adjacent to La Grande Rue. The vineyard, now covering 6.06 hectares, is modest in size compared to other Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, but it is a large vineyard within Vosne-Romanée, more than three times the size of Romanée-Conti.
The soils in the vineyard are primarily brown limestone, with thin, well-drained soils in the higher elevations and deep, dark limestone soils in the lower elevations. Pinot Noir is a prominent grape variety in the vineyard, producing wines that display rich aromas of small red and black fruits, violets, spices, and undergrowth. The wines are full-bodied, structured, and possess a delicate, yet powerful palate, making them highly alluring.
Wine critic Neal Martin once mentioned in his article that the wines produced from the Romanée-Conti vineyard of Romanée-Conti have elevated Pinot Noir to another level, but this wine cannot be regarded as the winery's superior quality wine in every vintage, because in some years the wines produced from the La Tache vineyard are the winery's more outstanding wine.
