La Tâche: A Monopole Grand Cru Rivalling Romanée-Conti — HorCon Wine Recycling's True Story
Whenever La Tâche Grand Cru is mentioned, people naturally think of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, as it is a monopole vineyard of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In the hearts of Burgundy wine lovers, La Tâche firmly holds the second-most important position among the winery's vineyards.
The origin of whether "Tâche" or "Tache" is correct in the name of La Tâche vineyard remains unknown. Although it is only a difference in a diacritical mark, the two French words have very different meanings. "Tâche" with a diacritical mark means "task," while "Tache" without a diacritical mark means "stain." From the perspective of viticulture, the former meaning is obviously more relevant. A widely accepted theory is that La Tâche means "task," originally referring to a vineyard managed by workers who were paid based on the amount of work completed. It was not until the 1978 vintage that Domaine de la Romanée-Conti officially added the diacritical mark to the label.
Although La Tâche vineyard now exists as a single vineyard, its status as a monopole has been challenged, and its area has significantly expanded over the past 100 years.
La Tâche vineyard originally belonged to the monks of Saint-Vivant Abbey. In the 1630s, the Croonembourg family purchased this vineyard from the monks. After the 1760s, La Tâche vineyard changed hands multiple times.
In 1815, La Tâche vineyard came into the possession of Count Louis Liger-Belair. The Liger-Belair family's ownership of La Tâche lasted for 118 years, during which time La Tâche vineyard further solidified its reputation as one of Burgundy's outstanding terroirs.
However, during this period, the owners of the neighboring Les Gaudichots vineyard began to try to sell wine under the name of La Tâche. The increasing number of wines labeled as La Tâche angered the Liger-Belair family. This dispute was finally resolved in 1932, when the lawsuit concluded that wines produced from the main plots of Les Gaudichots could all be sold under the name of La Tâche, setting the stage for the later incorporation of Les Gaudichots' plots into La Tâche. At this time, most of Les Gaudichots belonged to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
In 1933, due to inheritance issues, the Liger-Belair family was forced to auction off their vineyards, and La Tâche vineyard was acquired by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. With the previous court ruling, it was only natural for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to subsequently merge its holdings in Les Gaudichots into La Tâche vineyard.
In 1936, the French AOC system was officially introduced, and the merged La Tâche vineyard was successfully classified as a Grand Cru, which included more than 1 hectare of the original La Tâche vineyard and more than 4 hectares of Les Gaudichots vineyard. By chance, within a few years, La Tâche vineyard was able to expand and become a monopole Grand Cru of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
La Tâche vineyard is located in the heart of the Côte de Nuits region, at the southernmost tip of the Vosne-Romanée village, adjacent to La Grande Rue. The vineyard now covers an area of 6.06 hectares, which is of average size compared to other Grand Crus in Burgundy, but it is a relatively large vineyard within the Vosne-Romanée village, more than three times the size of Romanée-Conti.
The soil in the vineyard is predominantly brown limestone. In higher areas, the soil layer is thinner and well-drained, while in lower areas, the soil layer is deeper and rich in dark limestone. The garden is dominated by Pinot Noir, producing wines that display rich aromas of small red fruits, black fruits, violets, spices, and garrigue. These wines are full-bodied, with clear structure, and a delicate yet powerful taste that is very appealing.
Wine critic Neal Martin once mentioned in his article that the wines produced from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's Romanée-Conti vineyard elevate Pinot Noir to another level, but this wine is not necessarily the best wine of the winery in every vintage, as in some vintages, the wine from La Tâche vineyard is actually the more outstanding one.

A: The recycling price for fine wines is based on the Liv-ex international index and recent auction prices. Full-score vintages of DRC Romanée-Conti, Petrus, Lafite, etc., can reach six-figure Hong Kong dollars per bottle. The actual quote will depend on the vintage, fill level, label integrity, and proof of origin. We recommend sending your wine details via WhatsApp to 94530784 for a detailed quote within 15 minutes.
Q: Will you still buy red wine with a low fill level or slight label scuffs?
A: Yes, we do. While a fill level below the shoulder, damaged, or stained labels may affect the valuation, Hong K Recycling will still make an offer as long as the bottle is original and sealed, with no leakage, and the vintage and wine type are identifiable. We guarantee no last-minute price reductions during on-site inspection.
Q: Is it necessary to provide original purchase receipts when recycling fine wines?
A: Receipts can serve as proof of provenance and help increase the valuation, but they are not mandatory. We conduct professional appraisals based on the label, capsule, cork, wine condition, and bottle coding. Recycling can proceed normally without receipts.
Q: How do you ensure privacy when recycling red wine?
A: Hong K Recycling strictly protects client privacy, and all transaction information will not be disclosed to third parties. For home collection, we use discreet packaging, and the entire transaction process is kept confidential.
Q: Does an opened bottle of red wine still have recycling value?
A: Generally, an opened bottle of red wine no longer has recycling value. However, empty bottles of extremely rare wines (such as top vintages of DRC, Petrus) may be sought after by some collectors for display purposes, with their value depending on the rarity of the wine.
