Vinyl records, also known as LPs (long play), are stereo, long-grooved records made of black celluloid. The dominant music format of the 20th century, vinyl records enjoyed a wide audience of all ages due to their superior sound quality and affordability. Technical specifications aside, of all the recording media available—records, tapes, and CDs—LPs offer the closest sound quality to the original, a feat sought after by music lovers. Many works by renowned performers, conductors, big bands, and vocalists were first released on vinyl. LPs, if properly preserved, have a long lifespan.
