Collection: Recycled Mouton series

Château Mouton Rothschild is the only winery in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification to be promoted from Second Growth to First Growth (achieved in 1973 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild), and one of the five First Growths of Bordeaux's Left Bank. Since 1945, Mouton has commissioned different artists each year to design its labels – Picasso, Warhol, Dalí, Chagall, Jeff Koons, Xu Bing, and Gu Wenda have all participated – making Mouton both a wine and an art collectible.

Special Notes on Mouton Rothschild Valuation

  1. 2000 Millennium Golden Ram: The only label without an artist's drawing. The bottle features a gold Augustan commemorative engraving, and its market price is significantly higher than surrounding vintages.
  2. 2008 Xu Bing Design: The first time a Chinese artist designed the Mouton label, particularly sought after in the Asian market.
  3. OWC Original Wooden Case: Cases with the winery's brand, vintage, and artist's signature. A complete case of 6 or 12 bottles can add 8-15% to the value.
  4. Large Formats Magnum / Double Magnum: Artist labels appear more exquisite on large formats. The price per milliliter is usually 30-100% higher than a 750ml bottle.

Common FAQs

Are the artistic labels of Mouton Rothschild particularly valuable?

Yes. Mouton Rothschild annually invites different master artists to design its labels. Certain vintages, such as the 1945 "V" label and the 1973 Picasso design, are highly collectible, with prices far exceeding those of regular vintages.

Do you buy back Mouton Rothschild's second wine, Petit Mouton?

Yes. Petit Mouton offers good quality and value for money, especially good vintages (e.g., 2009, 2010), which can fetch a considerable resale price.

The fill level of my Mouton Rothschild is a bit low, does that significantly affect its value?

It depends on the vintage. A moderate drop in fill level is normal for old wines over 30 years old. However, for younger wines, a low fill level might indicate storage issues and will affect the quoted price.
