Why is 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild so precious?

In the world of fine wine collecting, 1982 is widely recognized as the "vintage of the century" for the Bordeaux region of France. The perfect climatic conditions that year resulted in grapes with exceptional ripeness and balance, making the 1982 vintage wines from the Bordeaux First Growths a dream for collectors worldwide.

In addition to its excellent quality and aging potential, Chateau Mouton Rothschild is most famous for its tradition of inviting a different artist to design its label each year. The 1982 Mouton Rothschild label was created by renowned American film director John Huston, depicting celebratory rams and grapes, symbolizing the joy of a bountiful harvest. The combination of a top vintage wine and unique artistic value has kept the price of this wine consistently high in the old wine investment and auction markets.

Old Wine Appraisal: How do we assess the value of your 1982 Mouton Rothschild?

Hong Kong Hang has an experienced wine tasting and appraisal team. When acquiring high-value Mouton Rothschild wines, we use the following key indicators to conduct the most objective and accurate assessment of your cherished collection's preservation status, ensuring you receive the most reasonable offer:

Assessment Item Detailed Appraisal Standards & Explanation Impact on Buyback Price
Fill Level Examine the height of the wine liquid in the bottle. For an old wine from 1982, the best condition is if the fill level remains at the neck or top shoulder, indicating minimal evaporation during the aging process. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Extremely High)
Label Condition The 1982 artistic label is one of its core values. We will inspect the label's integrity for any severe damage, mold, dirt, or excessive fading. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (High)
Capsule & Cork Check if the lead capsule is intact and undamaged, and observe for any signs of "seepage" around the cork, which is an important indicator of heat damage. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Extremely High)
Color & Clarity Shine a strong light through the bottle to observe if the wine's color exhibits a healthy aged hue and the condition of any sediment at the bottom. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (High)
Provenance If you can provide original proof of purchase or demonstrate that the wine has been stored long-term in a professional temperature and humidity-controlled cellar, it will significantly boost its market credibility and acquisition value. ⭐⭐⭐ (Medium to High)

Common FAQs

I have red wines from several different wineries. Can they be valued together?

Yes. We accept mixed deliveries. Each bottle is appraised and quoted individually, with a minimum of one bottle. Any number of bottles is welcome.

Will a raised cork or leakage affect the recycling of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac 1982?

Yes. A drop in the liquid level is the worst thing for red wine. A raised cork usually indicates heat expansion or oxidation, which directly affects the storage condition and recycling price. Slight leakage needs to be evaluated bottle by bottle, and severe leakage may result in refusal to accept.

Will you still accept bottles with stained or water-damaged labels?

Yes. Minor stains, water marks, or creases on the label are considered normal signs of aging and will not significantly reduce the price. However, if the label is completely torn or the vintage year is unclear, it will affect the difficulty of appraisal and the valuation.

How much extra value does a complete wooden case (OWC/OCB) add?

An original wooden case is a significant bonus for prestigious red wines, especially a full sealed case of 6 or 12 bottles. The recycling price can be 15–30% higher than for loose bottles. The integrity of the wooden case (no damage, clear branding) will also be included in the assessment.

How do I get a free valuation from Hung Hong Trading?

Simply WhatsApp us at 9453 0784 with photos. Make sure to clearly photograph the front label of the bottle, the liquid level at the neck, and the capsule seal. We generally respond with a reference price within 10 minutes. We offer free pick-up service in Hong Kong, Kowloon, New Territories, and Macau, or you can visit our store for immediate drop-off.
