I. Cordyceps Sinensis Grade and Specification Comparison Chart

Understanding the specifications of Cordyceps Sinensis is key to ensuring fair and transparent recycling prices. Based on the standards from core producing regions like Tibet and Qinghai, we have compiled the following grade comparison chart to help you initially assess the value of your collection.

Grade Classification Number of Pieces per Jin (條/斤) Appearance Characteristics Market Scarcity Recommended Recycling Value
Premium King Cordyceps Approx. 800 - 1000 pieces Extremely plump worm body, golden color, full and round Extremely rare Highest
First-Grade Selected Approx. 1200 - 1500 pieces Robust worm body, moderate length of the stroma (grass head) Rare High
Second-Grade Preferred Approx. 1800 - 2200 pieces Medium-sized worm body, brownish-yellow color, high integrity Common Upper Medium
Third-Grade Common Approx. 3000+ pieces Relatively small worm body, suitable for daily nourishment Widespread Medium
Broken/Skewered Not counted by number of pieces Broken during excavation or transportation, connected with bamboo skewers Relatively common Depends on damage

II. Expert Tips: Three Ways to Authenticate Cordyceps Sinensis

In the Hong Kong recycling market, it's common for Ophiocordyceps sinensis and other imitations to be passed off as authentic Cordyceps Sinensis. Here are the identification methods summarized by Hong Kong Commercial Bank's senior appraisers:

  1. Examine the legs (most important feature): Authentic Cordyceps Sinensis has 8 pairs of legs on its body, with the 4 pairs on the abdomen being the most prominent.

  2. Observe the annular rings: The surface of the worm body has distinct annular lines, usually arranged in a repeating "three narrow, one wide" pattern.

  3. Smell the aroma: Real Cordyceps Sinensis has a natural grassy mushroom aroma or a faint fishy smell, absolutely no sulfur or pungent chemical odor.

  4. Cross-section inspection: When broken, the center of the cross-section reveals a distinct "V" shape or a black dot (digestive gland), which is difficult for counterfeits to imitate.

III. Four Dimensions Affecting Cordyceps Sinensis Recycling Prices

Aside from the origin (e.g., Nagqu and Yushu are preferred), the following factors directly influence the final settlement price:

  • Dryness: The recycling standard favors "fully dry." If it's damp and soft, the weight increases but the quality decreases, leading to a discounted price.

  • Integrity: Is the connection between the worm body and the stroma (grass head) tight? Are there any breaks, skewers, or gaps?

  • Color: High-quality Cordyceps should be golden yellow, yellowish-brown, or coffee-colored. If the color is black or dull, it may have been stored for too long or improperly.

  • Stroma length: Generally, those with stromas shorter than the worm body have better nutritional value and appearance, and thus a higher recycling value.

IV. Home Storage and Maintenance Guide (Preventing Pest Infestation and Mold)

If you don't plan to sell it immediately, it is recommended to adopt the following professional storage methods to preserve its value:

  • Short-term storage: Place Cordyceps in a sealed glass jar and store it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

  • Long-term storage (recommended): Seal Cordyceps in a plastic bag (or vacuum-seal) and place it in the refrigerator's cold storage compartment (0-5℃).

  • Pest prevention tip: You can place an appropriate amount of dried Szechuan peppercorns or cortex moutan in the sealed container, which can effectively prevent pest infestation.

  • Regular inspection: Check every 2-3 months. If slight dampness is found, promptly air-dry in a ventilated area, avoiding direct sunlight.
