Leslie Cheung (September 12, 1956 - April 1, 2003), born in Hong Kong, China, is a male singer, actor, musician, and one of the representatives of Hong Kong's multi-faceted development in film, television and music.
He made his official debut in 1977 and gained attention in 1983 with "The Wind Continues to Blow." His 1984 song "Monica" became the first dance song in Hong Kong to win both the Top Ten Chinese Golden Songs and the Jade Solid Gold Songs. He won the Jade Solid Gold Songs Gold Award in 1986 and 1987. In 1991, he won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor for Days of Being Wild. In 1993, he starred in Farewell My Concubine, which was the first film in Chinese film history to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival, and broke the box office record of mainland Chinese art films in the United States. He attracted the attention of the international film community with this film and won the Japan Film Critics Award for Best Actor and the Special Contribution Award of the China Film Performance Art Society Award; in the same year, he served on the jury of the Tokyo International Film Festival. In 1998, he became the first Asian actor to serve on the jury of the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2000, he was selected as one of the top 100 foreign actors of the 20th century by the "Japanese Film Junpo". In 2005, he was selected as one of the 100 outstanding actors in the 100 years of Chinese film.
