Case details

Every fine bottle carries a warm story of its own. In this edition, Hong Kang Trading shares a real customer case involving Uncle Lee from Kowloon. To welcome his newborn grandson and make room for childcare, Uncle Le...

1. Background: Making Room for a Grandson to Grow

Last Wednesday afternoon, Hong Kang Trading welcomed a smiling visitor—Uncle Lee from Kowloon. Uncle Lee is in his sixties and recently retired, and he looked full of energy.

After we sat down and made a cup of tea, Uncle Lee cheerfully shared his good news with us: “Boss, my daughter-in-law gave birth to a healthy, chubby grandson last week! To make it easier for us to help look after him, my wife and I discussed it and decided to clear out a study in our home, turn it into a nursery, and leave some space for the newly hired postnatal caregiver to rest.”

While clearing the room, Uncle Lee found this bottle of Rémy Martin Extra, which had been stored deep inside a cabinet for many years. An old friend had given him the bottle many years ago. As Uncle Lee rarely drinks spirits, it had remained unopened all this time.

“Now that we need to add a cot and a toy cabinet at home, I thought it would be more practical to find a reputable buyer for fragile, space-consuming bottles like this, then use the cash to buy a few tins of good formula for my grandson!” Uncle Lee said with a smile. After comparing online reviews of several specialist spirits buyers, he liked Hong Kang Trading's honest quotations and transparent process, so he added us on WhatsApp and booked a home visit.

2. Professional Appraisal: Details Determine Value

After hearing Uncle Lee's story, we were happy for him too. Our appraiser then put on gloves and began a careful assessment of the bottle of Rémy Martin Extra.

As you can see, the bottle Uncle Lee brought in was in excellent overall condition. The photos show its classic red presentation box, distinctive bottle design, and still-gleaming gold Rémy Martin emblem. Once the outer box was opened, the inside was also in excellent condition: the bottle sat securely in its white base, while the spirit displayed an appealing deep amber colour under the light.

During the appraisal, we explained our valuation criteria to Uncle Lee as we worked: “Uncle Lee, this bottle has been kept very well. When we buy spirits, we mainly examine four areas: the outer box and packaging, the condition of the seal wrap, the fill level, and the integrity of the label.”

Seeing how carefully we inspected the bottle and explained every detail in an orderly way, Uncle Lee nodded repeatedly: “I can rest easy leaving it to professionals like you.”

3. Product Assessment Table

After a comprehensive inspection, we gave Uncle Lee the following assessment of his bottle of Rémy Martin Extra:

Assessment Item Actual Condition Hong Kang's Appraisal
Brand and Category Rémy Martin Extra Cognac Undoubtedly authentic. The Extra grade is higher than XO and has consistently maintained extremely high liquidity and collector demand in the secondary market.
Packaging Completeness Includes the original red hard case and white interior securing base Only extremely light rubbing is visible on the corners of the outer box, and the internal structure is intact. Having the complete original box can significantly increase the buyback value, making this a positive factor.
Seal Wrap and Closure Original seal wrap intact, with no damage or signs of resealing The tight closure ensures that the spirit has not been replaced or oxidised, and is crucial when determining authenticity and storage condition.
Fill Level and Spirit Normal fill level at the standard position in the neck; clear spirit with no sediment It appears to have been stored in a cool place away from light, with no leakage or abnormal evaporation (spirit loss), and remains in excellent condition.
Overall Assessment Condition Grade: A (Excellent) The bottle was exceptionally well preserved, and we ultimately bought it at a price above the market average.

After the quotation was confirmed, Uncle Lee was very satisfied with the price. We completed the transaction in cash on the spot, and the entire process took less than twenty minutes. Holding the cash, Uncle Lee smiled and said he was going to choose a gift for his grandson right away.

4. Hong Kang Trading: Fine Spirits Buyback FAQ

To help more people like Uncle Lee understand the market for selling unused spirits, we have compiled several frequently asked questions:

  • Q1: My bottle has been stored for many years and the outer box is missing. Can you still buy it?

    • A: Absolutely! Although having the original outer box and accessories can improve the price, what matters most to us is the quality of the bottle itself, including its authenticity, fill level, and closure. As long as the bottle is in good condition, we will still offer a fair price at the stronger end of the market even without the outer box.

  • Q2: How can I tell whether the brandy at home has experienced “evaporation (spirit loss)”?

    • A: Stand the bottle upright and observe the liquid level at the neck. If the level is clearly below the normal line, or there is sticky spirit leaking from the closure and a strong smell of alcohol, evaporation may have occurred. Evaporation affects the buyback price, so we recommend dealing with it promptly once discovered.

  • Q3: Besides Rémy Martin, what other spirits brands does Hong Kang Trading buy?

    • A: We are a buyer of spirits, premium dried goods and collectibles. In addition to Rémy Martin, we offer high prices for cognacs such as Hennessy, Martell, and Camus, as well as single malt and Japanese whiskies including Macallan, Karuizawa, Yamazaki, and Hibiki. We also buy various types of premium dried seafood, silver coins, and stamps.

  • Q4: I do not know much about spirits and am worried about being given a low price. What should I do?

    • A: Hong Kang Trading follows the principle of “integrity first and fair dealing for everyone.” You can first take clear photos of the front and back of the bottle, the closure, and the fill level, then send them to us on WhatsApp. We will provide a free preliminary online valuation. If you are satisfied with the price, we can then proceed with an in-person transaction. We will never pressure you into a transaction.
