Do gold jewellery, gold bars or sheets, and gold coins or medals require the same information?

Not entirely. For jewellery, also note style, clasp, settings and non-gold parts. For bars, sheets or investment gold, note the refiner, serial number, certificate and sealed packaging. For coins and medals, note the country or issuer, year, denomination where present, series, diameter, capsule and original box.

Do hallmark and weight photographs confirm that an item is gold?

Photographs can show visible wording such as pure gold, 999, 916, 750 and 18K, together with a scale reading, but a hallmark is not completed material verification. State whether the reading includes stones, clasps, packaging or other non-gold parts; actual fineness and weight remain subject to physical review.

How should the refiner, issuer, serial number, certificate and packaging be matched?

For a bar or sheet, photograph the item, serial number, refiner or brand, certificate and sealed packaging separately. For a coin or medal, show the issuer, year, certificate, numbered card, capsule and original box. Mark a pairing only when the numbers or details correspond.

Should scratches, breaks, damaged packaging or surface spots be treated first?

No. Do not melt, file, acid-test, unset stones, open packaging, polish or clean coins. Photograph the full item and affected area, noting jewellery deformation or breaks, bar packaging condition, and coin edge knocks or surface spots before physical review.
