Appraisal FAQ

How should separate guides be prepared for coins and banknotes?

For coins, note the coin name, date, variety, weight, diameter and edge. For banknotes, note the denomination, series, prefix, serial number, watermark and count. Use different labels for the two groups.

Which views are required for each coin?

Photograph the obverse, reverse, edge, weight and diameter reading of every coin, and note patina, wear, chop marks, cleaning or repairs.

Which details are required for commemorative and other banknotes?

Photograph the front, back, prefix and complete serial number, watermark area and corners. For consecutive notes, also note the first and last serial numbers, note count and packaging condition.

May coins be cleaned or banknotes pressed before review?

No. Cleaning, polishing, pressing, washing, recolouring or trimming changes the original condition. Keep every item as found and photograph the flaws clearly.
