An Unexpected Clear-Out

Mr Chan, who has been in business for many years, usually enjoyed pouring himself a glass of red wine in his study after work and savouring a moment of quiet. His wine cabinet held quite a few fine bottles. Last week, however, he contacted Hong Kang Trading and said he wanted to sell a collection of top classified-growth Bordeaux wines from France.

When we met for the handover, I smiled and asked him, “Mr Chan, these bottles of Margaux and Haut-Brion are in such good condition. You must have taken great care of them. Why are you suddenly willing to let them go?”

Mr Chan gave a rueful smile, waved his hand and said, “Don’t ask. I went for my annual medical check-up last month. When the report came back, the doctor looked at my uric acid level and shook his head. The warning signs of gout were already there, and the doctor gave me a strict order—absolutely no more alcohol! Over the past few days, looking at these treasures in my wine cabinet has been torture. Rather than leave them there tempting me to slip up, I would prefer professionals like you to take them away. Out of sight, out of mind; I can finally give up the idea and focus on my health.”

I fully understood Mr Chan after hearing his story. Health always comes first, and by entrusting these carefully looked-after wines to Hong Kang Trading, he could also help them find another knowledgeable wine lover who would appreciate them.

Professional Appraisal: Details Determine Value

Mr Chan brought wines from several vintages. The most eye-catching were two of Bordeaux’s five First Growths: Château Margaux and Château Haut-Brion (also known in Chinese as Hong Yan Rong).

In the eyes of Hong Kang Trading’s professional appraisers, every old bottle has its own unique life history. In front of Mr Chan, we carefully inspected this collection of wine. The table below records the detailed assessment of the bottles in this buyback:

Product Assessment Table

Product Vintage Bottle and Label Condition Fill Level and Capsule Condition Overall Assessment Reference Image
Château Margaux 1999 The label is very well preserved overall, with clear printing and no obvious damage. The fill remains at an excellent into-neck level (Into Neck), and the capsule is intact. This 1999 Margaux is in its drinking window. It was stored in a good environment, shows no signs of seepage, and is suitable for both collecting and drinking; it received a high-value buyback rating. Château Margaux (2012) & Château Haut-Brion (1973) 2012 & 1973 The 2012 Margaux label is pristine. The 1973 Haut-Brion shows its age, but the main label artwork and vintage remain clearly legible. Both bottles have been given extra protection with cling film. The fill level of the 1973 wine has fallen slightly, but remains within a reasonable range. Mr Chan deliberately wrapped the bottles in cling film to protect them against humidity, showing how carefully he treated them. Although the 1973 Haut-Brion shows its age, it has strong historical value; the 2012 Margaux is in peak condition. Both have very strong marketability. Château Margaux (wholesale lot) 2023 The condition is extremely fresh, and the clean white label has no stains or scratches. The fill level is perfect, and the capsule is tight and as new. As a very recent en-primeur/new-release wine, it is in perfect condition and requires little verification for age-related deterioration. The lot was accepted as a package at the strongest available spot-market level. Please refer to file: 730952893_18115255100499141_1142665872877282877_n.jpg

Throughout the assessment, we explained to Mr Chan in detail how every factor affected the price. Watching our experienced inspection and transparent, objective quotation, he nodded with satisfaction: “I was right to come to Hong Kang. You work efficiently and the price is fair. This is much easier than trying to find buyers blindly online myself!”

In the end, both parties happily reached an agreement, and we arranged settlement for Mr Chan on the spot. He left our shop feeling relieved and began his new, healthier routine.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

To help more people like Mr Chan understand our service when they have unused items, Hong Kang Trading has prepared the following frequently asked questions:

Q1: Which factors matter most when Hong Kang Trading buys back wine?

  • We mainly assess the wine’s brand (such as the eight major estates), vintage, authenticity and storage condition, including its fill level, whether the label is intact, and whether the capsule is damaged or shows signs of seepage. The better preserved the wine, the higher its buyback price will generally be.

Q2: Do you still buy wine if its label has slight mould or damage?

  • Yes. Hong Kong’s humid climate means that slight mould spots or damage on old wine labels are common. As long as this does not prevent authentication and the wine itself remains well preserved, without serious seepage or spoilage, we will still offer a reasonable high-value buyback proposal.

Q3: What is the transaction process? Do you provide collection from the customer’s location?

  • The process is simple: take clear photographs of the item, including the front label, back label, closure and fill level, and send them to our WhatsApp or WeChat for an initial estimate. Once both parties consider the price suitable, you may visit our shop for the handover. For larger or higher-value collections, we also provide free collection across Hong Kong, with an in-person appraisal and immediate settlement by cash or bank transfer for a safe and efficient transaction.

Q4: What else do you buy besides wine?

  • Hong Kang Trading is a diversified trading company. In addition to premium spirits, wine and baijiu such as Moutai, we also buy valuable dried seafood—including abalone, sea cucumber, shark fin and fish maw—cordyceps, silver coins, stamps, commemorative coins and other collectibles.
