For older vinyl records by Jenny Tseng and Michael Kwan, the first appraisal question is usually not “How much is this singer worth?” but “Which release is this copy?” The same album can appear on different labels, with different sleeves and catalogue numbers, or in later reissues. The condition of the record, sleeve and original inserts also matters. Using albums by these two singers, this guide explains how to identify a release and document a copy before offering it for sale.

An asking price in a public listing, a completed sale and a dealer's buyback offer are three different figures. First identify the same release, then compare the sale date and the condition of both record and sleeve. A singer's name or one exceptional sale cannot establish the offer for another copy. Discogs says its low, median and high prices for a release are based on the last 30 sales of that release; see its sales history guide.

1. Jenny Tseng: from album name to the physical release

Jenny Tseng's records span different works and releases. When sorting an older record, photograph the front and back covers, the centre labels and the runout inscriptions. Then check the label, catalogue number and track list printed on the sleeve. Similar cover art alone does not establish that two copies are the same release.

Jenny Tseng and contemporary female singers: what to check on each record

The albums below are a starting list for documenting records by Jenny Tseng and singers of the same period. The work's title is only the beginning: verify the year, first-pressing status, label and inserts against the physical copy and release-specific records.

WorkPhysical copy and release checks
Jenny Tseng, 《夢中的媽媽》Compare the language and track list on the cover with the record label. Do not treat a song with the same name or a release from another territory as the same pressing. Check for deep scratches and water damage to the sleeve.
Jenny Tseng, 《甄妮》A self-titled album is hard to identify by title alone. Record the label, catalogue number, back-cover track list and runout inscriptions before matching it to a specific release.
Jenny Tseng, 《甄妮演唱會精選》Confirm the sleeve, tracks, number of discs and any included booklet. Check whether playback skips or has persistent noise.
Jenny Tseng, 《迷人的五月》Check whether the sleeve matches the centre label. Confirm whether a lyric sheet, poster or other insert belongs to that release; do not infer a first pressing from the cover alone.
Roman Tam and Jenny Tseng, 《射鵰英雄傳》 (Legend of the Condor Heroes)Distinguish the cover design from the actual pressing. Check for inserts, seam splits, moisture damage and scratches. A museum's acquisition of the cover design says nothing by itself about the market price of a particular copy.
Sally Yeh, 《葉蒨文》Use the catalogue number and track list to distinguish self-titled works and other releases. Record the condition of both vinyl and sleeve.
Sally Yeh, 《Cha Cha Cha》Check the format, speed, tracks and catalogue number printed on the label and sleeve, then inspect the playing surface for wear.
Sally Yeh, 《甜言蜜語》Compare the label, tracks and release markings on the record and sleeve. Check whether the lyric sheet and sleeve are complete.
Sally Yeh, 《祝福》Do not confuse the album with the song of the same name or a later compilation. Compare the cover, tracks, catalogue number and pressing details.
Sally Yeh, 《祝福經典十三首》Confirm the compilation's tracks, disc count and release. Inspect the complete sleeve and inserts alongside the record.

There is a useful design reference for 《射鵰英雄傳》 (Legend of the Condor Heroes). M+ holds the 1983 Roman Tam and Jenny Tseng vinyl album designed by Alan Chan as design object 2020.322. This helps place the sleeve in its cultural context; it does not prove that another copy with the same title is a first pressing, in good condition or worth a premium. See the M+ collection record.

A release database separately lists a 1983 Hong Kong EMI 12-inch vinyl release of 《射鵰英雄傳》, catalogue number EMGS-6108, apart from later CD and SACD editions. Use that record as a starting point: compare the number on your sleeve and centre label, then check the tracks and runout. A cover resembling the M+ object does not prove that the records came from the same pressing. View the MusicBrainz release group.

Sally Yeh's records from the same period should be catalogued separately from Jenny Tseng's works. MusicBrainz lists the 1984 Hong Kong WEA vinyl 《葉蒨文》 as 2292 50363-1, the 1987 WEA vinyl 《甜言蜜語》 as 229254726-1, and the 1988 WEA vinyl 《祝福》 as 2292 55523-1. CDs and cassettes bearing the same album names can have different numbers. These are records for particular database releases; confirm them against the copy in hand. View Sally Yeh releases.

2. Michael Kwan: self-titled records, compilations and pressing details

Collectors often ask about television theme songs, sleeves and pressings on Michael Kwan records. A shared song title, however, does not mean two records are the same release. Compare the centre label, back-cover track list, catalogue number and runout inscriptions, and document the condition of vinyl and sleeve separately. Discogs' identifier guidelines explain that Matrix/Runout information is usually inscribed in the empty area near a record's centre and can help distinguish releases. One letter or the appearance of a centre label alone does not establish a country of manufacture or sound quality.

WorkPhysical copy and release checks
《大地恩情》Compare the label, catalogue number and tracks on the record and sleeve, and photograph the runout on both sides. Check for skips and sleeve seam splits.
《天籟》Check the album title and tracks so that the album is not confused with a song of the same name or its appearance on a compilation. Keep photographs of the centre label and inserts.
《關正傑》Identify this self-titled record by sleeve, label, catalogue number and tracks. Artist and title alone cannot establish its release year.
《關正傑名曲選第一輯》Check whether the cover printing and centre label agree, then record the runout on both sides. Cover differences alone do not prove a first pressing or better sound.
《關正傑名曲選第二輯》Check whether sleeve, centre label and runout belong to the same release. Do not use a single “Y” code to infer a Dutch, West German or Hong Kong pressing.

Specific comparison points for five Michael Kwan records

A physical listing documents a 1980 Hong Kong Philips vinyl release of 《大地恩情》, catalogue number 6380 214, with tracks including 〈大地恩情〉, 〈愛是難避免〉, 〈落日在何處〉, 〈星〉, 〈金山夢〉 and 〈第二故鄉〉. A listing for 《天籟》 documents a 1983 Hong Kong Philips vinyl release, 814 972-1, with tracks including 〈天籟…星河傳說〉, 〈兩心通〉, 〈紅了我的臉〉, 〈織個幽夢〉 and 〈小小一個家〉. Use the catalogue numbers and track lists to identify the works, then compare sleeves, runouts and condition. Physical listing for 《大地恩情》; physical listing for 《天籟》.

A physical listing for a different, self-titled 《關正傑》 documents a 1984 Contec Sound vinyl release, CS 8455. Its listed tracks include 〈曾為你編個夢〉, 〈香江歲月〉, 〈偎依黃昏裡〉, 〈痴到情之最〉 and 〈是你是你是你〉. This is not the same release as the Philips records above. Start with the label and catalogue number when examining the sleeve. View the physical listing for 《關正傑》.

A database record for the first 《關正傑名曲選》 compilation lists a 1981 Philips vinyl release, 6380 221, with tracks including 〈天蠶變〉, 〈殘夢〉, the duet 〈人在旅途灑淚時〉 with Annabelle Louie, and 〈人在江湖〉. The artist's release overview lists 《名曲選第二輯》 as a separate 1984 compilation. Confirm the second volume's exact LP track list and catalogue number from its own centre label, sleeve and runout; do not derive them from the first volume. How should sleeve and centre-label differences be used?

Different covers, centre-label lines and runout markings on copies of 《關正傑名曲選》 can point towards a corresponding release. Photograph them clearly and compare them with that release's sleeve, label, tracks and runout, rather than relying on a border, its absence or one letter. Listening results also depend on wear, cleaning and playback equipment. Without verifiable tests under comparable conditions, it is unsound to claim that one label design is always quieter, more spacious or worth several times as much.

3. Condition, sales records and promotional copies: how to read valuation evidence

Grade the record and sleeve separately

Discogs uses the Goldmine grading standard to describe vinyl and sleeve condition. Near Mint (NM) is close to flawless; Very Good Plus (VG+) allows minor signs of use; Very Good (VG) can have more noticeable surface noise; Good (G/G+) normally has significant noise and wear. Its grading guide also describes general value relationships between these grades and NM. Those ratios are platform grading references, not a fixed formula for Hong Kang's offers. An appraisal still depends on the exact release, playback condition, sleeve, inserts and comparable recent sales.

  • Vinyl: Note visible scratches, warping, mould, persistent noise or skips during playback. Photographs cannot fully replace a playback check.
  • Sleeve and inserts: Look for seam splits, water marks, writing, lyric sheets and posters. Check release-specific records before calling an insert “original”.
  • Sale comparisons: Identify the same release first, then compare sale dates and condition. An asking price is neither a completed sale nor a buyback offer.

Do not treat white labels, promos and test pressings as the same thing

White Label, Promo and Test Pressing describe different things in record databases. A white centre label alone does not establish a promotional release, a test pressing or an early run. Examine the markings on the record and package, and compare the tracks, catalogue number and runout. Discogs' format guidelines call for these descriptions to follow evidence from the physical item. The value of an uncommon release depends on its specific issue, condition and verifiable sales; the term “white label” alone establishes neither sound quality nor a buyback price.

4. Four sets of information to prepare before selling

  1. Front and back covers: Photograph the album name, label, tracks, catalogue number and sleeve corners so the work and sleeve condition can be identified.
  2. Centre labels and runouts: Photograph the labels and runout inscriptions on both sides. If the inscription is hard to see, adjust the light and camera angle without touching the grooves.
  3. Condition and inserts: Disclose scratches, skips, water marks or mould, and show any lyric sheets or posters. Until the material and cleaning method are known, avoid wiping the playing surface directly with a damp cloth or chemical cleaner.
  4. Inventory: If you have several records by Jenny Tseng, Michael Kwan or their contemporaries, list each work and its visible release details for individual comparison. There is no need to assign one price to the entire batch in advance.

5. Ask Hong Kang about vinyl buyback

To ask whether your Jenny Tseng, Michael Kwan or other Cantopop records are suitable for buyback, first provide photographs of the covers, centre labels, runouts and condition. Mention any lyric sheets or other inserts. Confirm any specific buying interest, price, meeting place and payment arrangements with the shop after it has checked the physical records.

You can contact Hong Kang on WhatsApp about vinyl buyback or return to the Hong Kang website for other buying guides.
