For a zodiac commemorative banknote, the essential fields are the issuing institution, year, denomination, edition, prefix and serial number, and paper condition. The zodiac motif is only a theme; it does not establish the note’s monetary identity.

First establish who issued what

Transcribe the issuing institution, legal denomination, year, series name and signatures exactly as printed on the note. Keep zodiac issues from different regions or banks separate; do not create one edition table spanning different monetary systems.

  • Photograph the entire front and back, including all edges.
  • Take close-ups of the prefix, serial number and signatures.
  • Match every note’s serial number to the certificate supplied with its set.

A notable number does not override the edition

Consecutive numbers, matching endings and “birthday” numbers may be recorded separately, but first establish the identity and quantity of the notes. An attractive number is not an official edition and cannot prove authenticity by itself.

  • Transcribe the complete prefix and serial number of every note.
  • Do not photograph only the top note in a stack.
  • Retain the original image of any possible error or blurred area for later review.

Describe the paper and preservation as found

Record folds, foxing, moisture marks, mould spots, pinholes, trimming and contact marks from plastic sleeves in separate fields. Do not iron, scrub or expose the note to strong light for a prolonged period.

  • Photograph one set under neutral light and another under raking light.
  • Packaging and certificates do not prove that the notes have remained dry.
  • Isolate items with suspected mould first and seek appropriate handling advice.

Cross-check certificates, packaging and notes separately

For the commemorative album, sleeve, certificate and outer box, separately record the issue wording, number and current condition, then link each one back to the relevant note. Complete packaging describes only the accessories currently present; it cannot replace the note’s identity, security features or traceable provenance.

  • Create a clear link between each accessory number and banknote number.
  • Clearly identify any later-added plastic sleeve or envelope.
  • Leave any unseen information blank and pending verification.

Frequently asked questions

Can notes with the same zodiac sign be placed in one edition?

No. The issuing institution, region, denomination, year and signatures must first match.

Do consecutive numbers constitute an official edition?

No. They are a numbering feature and should be recorded separately from the edition identity.

Should a note be flattened before it is photographed?

No. First preserve its current state and record the folds and paper condition to avoid causing further damage.
