Rolex Submariner: a generation-by-generation comparison of the bezels, dials, dimensions, movements, boxes and papers of refs. 16610LV, 116610LV and 126610LV against their black Submariner Date counterparts.

“Green Submariner” and “Black Submariner” are market nicknames, not substitutes for reference numbers. This guide distinguishes the 2003 ref. 16610LV, the 2010s refs. 116610LV/116610LN and the refs. 126610LV/126610LN introduced in 2020, so that a green bezel with a black dial, a green bezel with a green dial and a black bezel with a black dial are not mistaken for one another.

Three generations of green Submariner Date, with black counterparts

Reference / launch period Green variant Same-generation black variant Key identifiers
16610LV (introduced in 2003) Green anodised-aluminium bezel, black dial 16610: black bezel, black dial 40 mm generation; first check the warranty card, the serial-number period and whether the bezel is a later replacement
116610LV/116610LN (2010s) LV: green Cerachrom ceramic bezel with a green dial LN: black Cerachrom bezel with a black dial 40 mm generation; the full reference number is more reliable than the “green/black Submariner” nickname
126610LV/126610LN (from 2020) LV: green Cerachrom bezel with a black dial LN: black Cerachrom bezel with a black dial 41 mm with calibre 3235; both are Submariner Date models

Match accessories to the correct generation

  • The full reference number, purchase date and dealer details on the warranty card should correspond to the watch itself.
  • Record the box, hang tag, manuals, bracelet links, clasp code and service paperwork separately. Similar colours do not mean that the box and papers are correct for the same generation.
  • The bezel, dial, hands and bracelet may have been replaced during servicing. Photographs can flag questions, but cannot replace opening the case or a professional inspection.

Rolex Submariner: green and black references, years and accessories — FAQs

The 16610LV and 126610LV both have a green bezel and black dial. Are they from the same generation?

No. Rolex’s official history places the 16610LV at the 2003 milestone. The current 126610LV belongs to a different generation, with a 41 mm case and calibre 3235.

Why is “Green Submariner” alone not enough to identify a 116610LV?

Because it has a green ceramic bezel and green dial, whereas the 126610LV has a green bezel and black dial. Omitting the reference number hides the most important differences in appearance and generation.

Do complete box and papers guarantee that the watch is entirely original?

No. The box and papers support provenance and reference details, but the bezel, dial, hands, bracelet and any service replacements still need to be checked individually.

Primary sources and evidence levels

  • Rolex: Submariner historical timeline: directly supports the 2003 milestone for the 16610LV, with its green aluminium bezel and black dial.
  • Rolex: 126610LV: directly supports the current green Cerachrom bezel, black dial, 41 mm case and calibre 3235.
  • Rolex: 126610LN: directly supports the current black Cerachrom bezel, black dial, 41 mm case and calibre 3235.
