This page explains the evidence boundary around the 2022 Saint-Émilion classification and the decisions by Château Ausone, Château Cheval Blanc and Château Angélus. It builds a timeline from official or authoritative sources while keeping historical context separate from individual bottles.

Clarify the name and timeline first

The 2022 Saint-Émilion classification requires a clear distinction between an estate not participating in that classification and an estate leaving the appellation; these are not the same.

  1. 1. Château Ausone and Château Cheval Blanc did not apply for the 2022 Saint-Émilion classification. Château Angélus also announced officially in January 2022 that it was withdrawing its application.
  2. 2. The final official 2022 list still contains Premier Grand Cru Classé and Grand Cru Classé estates. It is the classification list, not a list of every Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wine.
  3. 3. Non-participation does not automatically change an estate's legal appellation status or determine whether secondary-market prices will rise or fall.

How historical sources apply to current variants

Historical sources can explain appellations, estates and wine names. For an individual bottle, record the vintage, volume, labels, provenance and present condition separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can historical accounts alone establish an individual bottle's identity?

No. History provides context, while an individual bottle still depends on official markings, production details, provenance and verifiable records.

Can old articles or auction titles be directly used as version names?

No. Transcribe the official markings first, then verify them against official or primary sources. Treat nicknames only as search clues.

Why doesn't this article provide a fixed price?

Prices change with time, variant, condition, provenance and transaction terms. Historical context should not be treated as a forecast of returns.

Primary or authoritative sources

External sources help verify names, systems and timelines. They do not, by themselves, establish the authenticity, condition or value of any individual item.

Continue with source-led verification

Begin with the official or authoritative sources above, then separate the timeline, official name and individual bottle version. Do not use a brand story as proof of version or provenance.

For any bottle comparison, verify the estate or producer, official wine, vintage, volume, fill level, closure, leakage, labels, wooden case and storage history. Ratings and market data do not represent the condition of an individual bottle.

If you have a Saint-Émilion bottle to document, begin with the fields above. You can send a numbered list and clear photos via WhatsApp, or call +852 9453 0784. Making contact does not mean that an appraisal or quotation has been completed. Any conclusion remains subject to verifiable records and inspection of the item.
