Wine Preservation and Value: Vintage Is Not the Only Indicator

Many people believe that the older a wine is, the more valuable it becomes. In reality, vintage is just one factor. Having been in the wine buyback business for over a decade, we've seen numerous 1982 Lafites lose 30% of their value due to improper storage. Conversely, some 2005 and 2009 wines, kept in temperature-controlled cellars, with intact labels and normal fill levels, have fetched higher market prices than other bottles from the same vintage.

Several key factors influence a wine's value. First is temperature; ideal long-term storage is 12–15°C, as temperature fluctuations accelerate oxidation. Second is humidity, ideally around 70%; too dry and corks can shrink and leak, too humid and labels can mold. Third is light; UV rays can damage a wine's structure, so dark storage is crucial.

The pricing logic for Bordeaux and Burgundy also differs. Bordeaux First Growths (Lafite, Mouton) have relatively stable production, and their prices closely follow market trends. The DRC series from Burgundy, however, has extremely limited production, and good vintages are often priceless. When assessing a wine's value, besides the vintage, the fill level is also critical—if the wine level is below the shoulder, it usually indicates leakage or evaporation, significantly reducing its value.

Furthermore, provenance documentation is becoming increasingly important. Wines with auction house records, original case shipping manifests, or cellar storage certificates inspire much more buyer confidence, naturally stabilizing their prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to keep the original wooden case for wine buyback?

Keeping the original wooden case (OWC), intact label, and no sunken cork can increase the wine's value by 5–15%. If the case is lost, it can still be pre-owned, but the premium will be slightly lower.

How much is a bottle of DRC worth approximately?

It depends on the vintage and specific wine: A full set of Romanée-Conti 1990 is valued at over HKD 2 million, while a single bottle of the 2018 vintage is approximately HKD 300,000–500,000. The actual market price will be based on the day's quote via WhatsApp.

I have 6 bottles of Lafite, can they be pre-owned together?

Absolutely, bulk buyback offers a premium. We recommend sending photos of the entire batch via WhatsApp, and we'll provide a single quote.

How long until wine becomes worthless?

Top-tier fine wines (Lafite, DRC, Petrus) have a "drinking window" concept; while their drinking value may decrease past this window, their collection/auction value may not. Lower-end wines typically lose their buyback value after 10–15 years.
