Hello everyone, whisky collectors and investors! This is Hong Kang Trading. In recent years, Japanese whisky has become a genuinely sought-after collectible in the global market, especially in Hong Kong. When most peo...
I. Hanyu Distillery: The Historical Backdrop of Discontinued Original Casks
To evaluate the value of any Hanyu spirit, one must first understand its "discontinued" nature. The Hanyu Distillery was founded in 1941 by the Akuto family, initially producing sake before switching to whisky. Unfortunately, due to the collapse of Japan's economic bubble in the 1990s, Hanyu was forced to cease production in 2000, and its facilities were dismantled in 2004.
At that time, Ichiro Akuto, the current founder of Chichibu Distillery, painstakingly rescued the last 400 casks of original spirit. These 400 casks are the root of all subsequent Hanyu legends. This means that: every bottle of Hanyu whisky is, in a physical sense, a non-renewable resource. As time passes, the original spirit will only become scarcer. This structural scarcity is the core driver of its long-term appreciation.

II. Overlooked Golden Assets: Vintage Age Statements Series
While the "Card Series" has a strong visual impact, seasoned collectors are well aware that Hanyu's early Vintage Age Statements Series are the purest embodiment of quality and history.
1. Hanyu 10-Year, 15-Year, 20-Year, and 23-Year Original Casks
These bottlings usually come with simple labels, without complex illustrations, but they perform very steadily in the secondary market. For example, Hanyu 23-Year Single Cask (Cask Strength), with its extremely high maturity, often fetches astonishing prices at auctions, yet it is often overlooked by general investors. According to recent market data, the resale price for these high-aged single cask Hanyu whiskies has steadily climbed to over HKD $85,000 to $120,000 per bottle, depending on the cask number and condition.
2. 1980s Sherry Cask Series
Hanyu whiskies distilled in the 1980s, especially those matured in sherry casks, offer rich and complex flavors. These whiskies are highly sought after in the resale market because they not only have collector's value but are also considered exceptional drams by top whisky enthusiasts.

III. Bridges Across Generations: Double Distilleries Series
This is one of the masterpieces created by Ichiro Akuto after founding the "Ichiro's Malt" brand, strategically significant but relatively affordable, making it a severely undervalued appreciation target.
1. Hanyu & Chichibu Double Distilleries Series
This whisky skillfully blends discontinued Hanyu malt original spirit with the then-nascent Chichibu malt original spirit. It is not just a bottle of whisky, but a symbol of the "rebirth" of Japanese whisky.
- Market Status: When these whiskies were released around 2010, their prices were not high. Current resale estimates are approximately between HKD $14,000 and $20,000.
- Reason for Undervaluation: Many investors consider it a "Blended Malt" rather than a "Single Malt," and thus do not pay much attention to it. However, with original spirit becoming increasingly scarce, this intergenerational creation containing a high proportion of discontinued Hanyu original spirit has significant future potential.
2. Mizunara Wood Reserve (MWR) and Leaf Series
Hanyu's "Golden Leaf" (Mizunara Wood Reserve) and "Red Leaf" (Wine Wood Reserve) series, although now classified as regular Chichibu products, contained a significant amount of precious remaining Hanyu original spirit in their early batches. The current resale price for these whiskies is around HKD $12,000 to $15,000 (early versions are more expensive), making them a good starting point for Hanyu collectors.

IV. Hidden Powerhouses: The Game Series and Double Cards
In addition to the standard 54 playing cards, Ichiro also collaborated with some top liquor merchants to launch special series. The scarcity of these whiskies sometimes even surpasses that of ordinary cards.
1. The Game Series (Mizunara Wood Finish)
This is a niche series released for core enthusiasts, such as "The Game Fifth Edition," typically featuring long-aged Hanyu original spirit finished in Mizunara casks. Its complex sandalwood and agarwood flavors often win over many high-price cards in blind tastings. Current auction prices are around HKD $130,000, but compared to top cards (such as "10 of Spades" or "Joker"), its fame still has room to grow.
2. Double Card Series
For example, special editions like "King of Six Diamonds" feature two card faces on the label. This design aims to emphasize the aesthetic integration of different vintage spirits. Although technically part of the "Card Series" universe, they are often overlooked by collectors who focus on completing the standard 54-bottle set, which can result in their single-bottle resale value being lower than that of single cards from the same vintage – an opportunity for knowledgeable buyers.
