Burning cigar tobacco produces harmful substances, while suspected mould adds further uncertainty and risk. This page does not recommend “wiping it off and smoking it”.
Isolate and document first
- Stop smoking any cigar with suspected mould and seal it separately from other cigars.
- Photograph the inside of the case, cigar surfaces, seams, humidification component, and temperature and humidity readings.
- Do not brush powder away in a shared space. Empty the travel humidor first and inspect it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Public-health boundaries
Hong Kong’s Tobacco and Alcohol Control Office explains that tobacco smoke contains many harmful substances and that cigars are not a safe alternative. Never test suspected mould by smoking the item.
- Suspected mould: do not smoke the cigar.
- If respiratory discomfort develops, leave the exposure area and seek medical attention.
- A record of collection condition is not a medical or authenticity assessment.
Cohiba 50th Anniversary Travel Humidor: frequently asked questions about suspected mould, humidification and health stop points
Are white spots always mould?
A photograph may not be enough to tell. Until mould has been ruled out, isolate the item as suspect and do not smoke it.
Can the cigar be smoked after the spots are wiped away?
This is not recommended. Surface treatment cannot establish that there is no contamination or other health risk.

Organise the item using the fields in this article
To document items covered by “Cohiba 50th Anniversary Travel Humidor: Suspected Mould, Humidification and Health Stop Points”, first make sure every photograph carries the same item identifier, and retain views of the front and back, key markings, accessories and visible anomalies. You may send the details via WhatsApp, or call +852 9453 0784; making contact does not mean that an appraisal or quotation has been completed.
Additional checks and stop points
Record the travel humidor and cigars separately. For the case, inspect the lining, seal and visible spots; for the cigars, inspect the wrapper, smell and signs of moisture. If there are suspected mould spots, furry growth, spreading or an irritating smell, stop close inspection and isolate the items. Health precautions take priority over cosmetic cleaning or rehumidification. Record the photograph date and storage location so that any change can be traced.
